- DISPLAY TECHNOLOGIES
-
-
- The category DISPLAY TECHNOLOGIES consists of technology
- which can or is being used to develop visual display systems for
- Virtual Reality. There are many types of display systems that
- have not yet been developed and we have attempted to list
- interesting technology and available components that might
- potentially be used in the construction of future VR display
- systems.
-
- A Head mounted display or HMD as they are often referred to, is
- the single the most interesting design aspect of a VR system.
- Often this is what is shown in the press and in promotional
- materials covering Virtual Reality. These unusual looking helmet-
- goggles allow a user to wear a stereo visual unit which allows
- the wearer to be totally immersed in a visual (and audio)
- simulation. Head mounted units can be configured for tracking
- positional data and are most effective when this information is
- fed back to the wearer in the form of rapidly updating visual
- scene changes that reflect head motion.
- A major drawback, however, is that HMD based VR systems are
- often set up for one participant at a time. All system resources
- are dedicated to that single user and others must wait in line to
- participate. Multiple HMD based systems can be networked,
- however, the complete single user configuration must be
- duplicated in entirety for each additional participant. This adds
- extreme cost to the development of shared systems.
-
- HMD displays are not the only viable display systems available
- for VR. New window based and micro-dome designs are coming
- around which use spherical video projection as a means of
- display. A group can experience a VR scenario without having to
- put on expensive HMDs with the use of these new projection
- displays. These designs can be coupled with visual scene
- analysis technology to assist in tracking the position of multiple
- participants. This way more people can share a VR experience
- together all at the same time.
-
- If your organization offers a unique or cost-effective device for
- integration in VR related display system designs, please send us
- literature for inclusion in revisions of the Virtual Reality
- Sourcebook and other publications.
